Economic and Social Committee (EESC)

|

The EESC sees itself as a bridge between Europe and its citizens. This is reflected in the composition of its 222 members who are appointed by the Council following suggestions from the national governments. They are organised in three groups:
- Employers (employer federations)
- Employees (unions)
- Various interests (craftsmen, farmers, consumers, freelance professions among others).
The central task of the WSA is to make clear the implications of the projects of the European Union on the forces of the economic and social life and thus exercise an advisory function with the large institutions (EP, Commission and Council). Its interest is to strengthen a Europe, which is close to its citizens, and the role of the civil society. The main concerns are currently the issue of employment, the future of the European social model and the implications of the expansion for the future of the European Union. It gives upon request, or on its own initiative, statements on all important European matters in which the consensus between the various interests of the economic and social life is aimed at.
The political representation of interests in the EESC is carried out through the direct contact to its members.
