Close and friendly contacts have been existed between the Latvian and the Stralsund Samaritans for many years, Ilze Bunke, Member of the City Council, and Andris Berzins, Managing Director of the Latvian and vice president of Samaritan International, took part in the meeting in the city hall. The meeting focused on the economic situation in both cities, the urban cultural offerings, new developments and projects in both cities as well as the upcoming parliamentary elections in Latvia. From 16 – 18 June 2010 a delegation of Polish Samaritans of Zaklicyn (SFOP) visited the ASB Germany to discuss a possible operation of a social alarm service in Poland. Experts from the ASB branches Bonn / Rhein-Sieg - Eifel and Mittelhessen explained current systems and concepts of social alarm services in Germany. Apart from that, the first steps into an international Samaritan partnership between SFOP and the ASB branch Heilbronn-Franken were coordinated. contact |

Representatives from Dansk Folkehjaelp and the ASB in Heiligehafen met in Heiligenhafen on 29 and 30 May 2010 for an exchange of experiences in the field of training guidelines, different structures in the rescue service, civil protection as well as in medical services and the expansion of cooperation. In a major training exercise in Eich near Worms from 24 – 27th June, 20 volunteers of the FAST team (First Assistance Samaritan Team) have tested the event of an "emergency" in disaster regions. The training exercise assumed that there was a flow of refugees caused by major floods and land slides. The main tasks of the team included the construction of their own camps, the installation and commissioning of the FAST water treatment plant and the set-up and arrangement of a provisional aid station. article 1 article 2 |

After Amsterdam, Bolzano, London and Vienna the ASB voluntary work unit offers this year from 21 to 25 September 2010 a study trip to Riga in Latvia. Participants visit projects and institutions in which volunteers are involved and learn more about the social backgrounds in Latvia. There will also be opportunities to explore the city. Around 100 children between 5 and 12 years from customers in the Samaritan Sozialmarkt (SOMA) in Floridsdorf could really have fun on Saturday. The Samaritans together with the Müller family from the Family Park had enabled this trip. May 12, 2010 Study on Volunteering in the European Union is now available online |

There are around 92 to 94 million adults involved in volunteering in the EU. This implies that about 22 to 23 % Europeans aged over 15 years are engaged in voluntary work. But whilst for example in Austria more than 40% of the adults are involved in volunteering and in Germany or Denmark 30-39%, in Poland or Slovakia only 10-19% of adults are active in volunteering. The study on volunteering in the European Union was launched by the Commission end of 2008 amongst others within the context of the preparation for a European Year of Volunteering. the complete study |

From 29.4. to 2.5.2010 the fifth Open German Championship for rescue dogs took place in Hünxe / Germany. 72 rescue teams from Spain, Poland, Holland, Denmark, Switzerland, Slovenia and Germany were competing in this challenging contest. Nicole Schulz from the German ASB in Stormarn won the German Championship 2010 in rubble search level B and could at the same time qualify for the 2010 World Championship in the Czech Republic. contact |

The European Youth Forum has launched a call for the European Youth Capital 2013. The applications should be submitted by 22 June 2010. The first European Youth Capital was Rotterdam (the Netherlands) in 2009; in 2010 the title has been awarded to Torino (Italy) and in 2011 it will be passed to Antwerp (Belgium). Members of the USB youth branch visited at Easter a Budapest children's hospital. An entertainment program cheered up the young patients, especially the ‘watering 'of girls with water or perfume as one of the most common Easter traditions in Hungary. A 6-year-old child with leukemia could look forward to an electric wheelchair, donated by the USB on this occasion. more … |

April 27, 2010 Third Summer Camp with Lithuanian and German youths |

The third summer camp for Lithuanian and Germany youths is held from 2nd to 10th July 2010 in Baltic Sea resort Rerik. The camp is organized by the ASB regional association of East Thuringia and its partner organisation LSB Pakruojis to serve the cultural exchange between young people of both countries. Under the slogan ‘Help is our task’ also basic first aid training is taking place. The theme of this year’s camp is ‘struggle against cardiac death’. The official logo and slogan for the European Year of Volunteering 2011 has been selected by Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding. The slogan ‘Volunteer! Make a difference’ will be translated into the official languages of the EU, linguistically adapted where necessary to retain the spirit and message of the English original. On Friday, 9 April 2010, staff members of energy company EON donated 12,100 euros to the ASB Germany. Three months after the earthquake people continue to help Haiti with their donations as can be seen by the fundraising efforts organized in recent weeks for the Haiti relief measures of the ASB Germany.
